Purpose

The source of this information is the Constituton and the Bylaws. But since not everyone can easily read through that kind of language, it is explained here in laymen's terms as well.

Positions
The positions on the Executive Board are: President, Executive Vice President, Vice-President of Finance, Vice-President of Academic Affairs and Governance, and the Vice-President of Programming.

The responsibilities of the Executive Board include:

  • Meet typically once weekly.
  • Attend all Senate and Council of Organizations meetings.
  • Serve as the primary representatives to all outside bodies.
  • Select someone to fill a vacancy within the Executive Board, subject to approval of the Senate.
  • Each member shall present an Executive Board report to the Senate and the Council of Organizations at the respective meetings.
  • Each member shall hold 12 paid office hours per week on the fourth floor of the SU.
  • Carrying out decisions made by the Senate and Council of Organizations.
  • They can veto the decisions of the Senate should they disagree, although it can be overridden.
  • They may participate in any committee or house as a regular member, but without voting rights within the respective body.

Additionally each position has specific requirements for themselves, click the links below to see them listed.

Each member of the Executive Board listed below has a vote in the weekly Executive Board Meetings. At these meetings the issues being dealt with at the Executive Board level are handled. The meetings are chaired by the President or the Executive Vice President should the President be unavailable.

As far as how to become any one of these positions, you should get in touch with a person on the Executive Board to let him or her know of your interest. Typically, the Vice-President of Academic Affairs and Governance shall be in charge for the matters of elections, or someone chosen by the Constitution and Rules Committee, which he or she oversees.

The elections generally happen in the Spring semesters around April 30th. These are the elections to participate in if you're looking for an Executive Board position. They are open elections for any member of the Student Association to participate in (essentially, if you're a student at SUNY New Paltz, you are a member of the Student Association), and thus elidgable to run in the elections.

Should there be a vacancy in the positions, the only way for it to be filled during the year for the remainder of the time is a nomination by the remaining Executive Board members and a confirmation of the nominee by the Student Senate.

There are quite a few rules for elections, but most are out-dated. In recent years, the elections have been held online thus, for example, it is impractical to not campaign within 100 feet of a polling station. One of the rules that does apply however is that one must be in good academic standing for the duration of their time in office. The trends have been that you will be given a certain amount of black and white copies to be made at the Print Shop for free, and you can use these to campaign as you wish.
