WHEREAS the mission statement of SUNY New Paltz states that the college is “dedicated to the construction of a vibrant intellectual/creative public forum which reflects and celebrates the diversity of our society”; and
WHEREAS the mission of the Student Association states that its purpose is to “represent and advocate for the student body,”; and
WHEREAS SUNY New Paltz is a vibrant and diverse campus in which all members of our community should feel secure and have access to appropriate facilities; and
WHEREAS a gender neutral bathroom is a universal design bathroom which is not labeled male or female, is open to all and is typically a lockable single occupant restroom; and
WHEREAS the campus of SUNY New Paltz is expected to undergo many changes with regard to new construction and renovation in the future; therefore the 49th Student Senate proposes
A Declaration
Be it DECLARED: The Student Association respectfully requests that SUNY New Paltz adopt a policy of including the provision of a gender neutral bathroom option in all future construction plans and designate current single occupant lockable bathrooms gender neutral wherever possible.
