Description:
We take action to promote a sustainable food system that is healthy for you
Purpose:
Our organization takes action to promote a sustainable food system that is healthy for you, farm-workers, and the environment. We raise awareness about where food comes from, and where it goes. Since SSA has been around, SUNY New Paltz has seen its first organic food selection in years, and has increased campus farmer’s markets. We’ve also started and hope to expand the first dining hall pilot compost program. SSA works with local farmers to protect this region's farmland, the local agricultural economy, and the health of the community and the planet. We helped start the Brook Farm Project CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) at the, a system in which members invest in a share of the farm's harvest at the beginning of the growing season. This means fresh food for you and a viable future for the farmer and his/her family. And guess what? There are shares specifically designed for STUDENTS! We also seek to empower people to grow their own food by providing space in a local garden plot and encouraging a relationship between students and local farmers.
