Description:
Creating a culture of peak sustainability, eco-effectiveness and a resource based economy
Purpose:
The Zeitgeist Movement is a student group focused on engaging students towards sustainable living and discussing peak sustainability, resource usage and the idea of a resource based economy. We advocate the intelligent management of the Earth’s resources, an end to institutionalized debt slavery, and the cultivation of a culture founded on sustainability instead of consumption. This semester, TZM is focusing on coordinating events with other environmental and advocacy related groups to promote sustainable living and ecological awareness to a large audience. The organization is founded on the idea that the worldwide problems of poverty, lack of clean water and nutrition, social and ecological degradation, global debt collapse, political and corporate corruption, and terrorism are all interconnected; in order to identify the root cause, the entire social system would need to be reassessed. However, meaningful change can only happen on a local level. This student group is dedicated to facilitating and inspiring communication on the community level, and connecting students with local sustainability oriented groups that benefit the community. There is already an extensive collection of these kinds of student groups operating in SUNY New Paltz. TZM will focus its energy in promoting and sustaining lasting networks of communication that encourage students and people to change their behavior in a way that benefits the local community, the local environment and ultimately the global human family.
