Semester:
Autumn 2009
Board:
Advocacy
Intercollegiate:
Not intercollegiate
Description:
Recycling/ Climate Change Prevention + Human Rights Advocacy
Purpose:
Last semester Synthesis became an umbrella organization for Invisible Children Club and Recycling Club, this year we are continuing the umbrella use but would prefer to be referred to with each club’s specific name. They are connected under the general goal of being social movement organizations that work to empower and educate individuals on how to build positive cultural change. The main purpose of Recycling Club is to educate the New Paltz community about how to properly recycle while instilling the value of recycling and participating in preventing global climate change. By putting on different events like our Consumption Series we aim to educate the community through strong visual representation and close interactions. At the meetings we have lectures to learn more about environmental studies and encourage making a difference in our environment. Recycling Club had two major programs last semester, RecyceMania and Reuse to Reduce, we went to the Power Shift conference in Washington DC and put on Earth Week 2009. Also, Recycling Club is run by the campus recycling coordinator. Events and information can also be found on New Paltz Green Thinking Blog. The main purpose of Recycling Club is to educate the New Paltz community about how to properly recycle while instilling the value of recycling and participating in preventing global climate change Invisible Children Club won the Best New Club of the year award from the SAUCE office, raised money by having movie screenings and hosting a visit from the Roadies and a book drive and attending The Rescue in New York City. Invisible Children club works to educate the population about the terrible situation of child soldiers in Uganda so that we can come together and end Africa’s longest running war.
