Description:
A mathematics club geared toward understanding and modeling of practical systems
Purpose:
SIAM New Paltz is the local chapter of the greater nationwide Society for Applied an Industrial Mathematics. We are an academic organization that is interested in both applying mathematical techniques to create solutions to often complex physical systems, and learning the theory and meaning behind these mathematical techniques. SIAM is the premier organization at New Paltz for math and science students of various disciplines. SIAM has members from the departments of Math, Physics, the School of Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Education and more. We encourage interdisciplinary study in SIAM, and we find that very often, problems in various branches of math and science and be solved by borrowing techniques from other disciplines. This semester, SIAM is studying Non-linear Dynamical Systems, a very important but difficult branch of mathematical systems. We are also starting our SIAM lecture series, where both visiting professors and New Paltz faculty give talks for students. Lastly, we are gearing up for the end of semester Integration Bee, a university-wide challenge testing students in their Calculus abilities. Finally, SIAM is a haven for math, science and engineering students at New Paltz. These departments are relatively small at SUNY New Paltz, but they are of immeasurable importance to the university as a whole. SIAM is proud to host students from all these different disciplines, and we can ensure that there is a mathematics driven extra curricular society for all of those who are interested.
