Description:
SSDP/NORML aims to reform the drug policies of New Paltz
Purpose:
Students for Sensible Drug Policy is an international grassroots network of students who are concerned about the impact drug abuse has on our communities, but who also know that the War on Drugs is failing our generation and our society. SSDP mobilizes and empowers young people to participate in the political process, pushing for sensible policies to achieve a safer and more just future, while fighting back against counterproductive Drug War policies, particularly those that directly harm students and youth. Here at New Paltz, we strive to make changes through our weekly meetings and our on campus events and demonstrations. Our most costly event is Rock Against Racism which absorbs almost all of our annual budget. Rock Against Racism is often noted as the biggest event to happen on campus every year. The following is Rock Against Racism’s Mission statement: Rock Against Racism is an annual event at SUNY New Paltz. Every year around the end of April, people gather at the Old Main Quad for a day of inspiring political music and speakers. Music ranges from hip hop to spoken word and from rock to soul. It's an amazing time and brings together people both in and outside the New Paltz community. RAR is a huge political platform using the medium of music. Though we are undoubtedly "rockin’ against racism" that is not the only thing we are concerned with. We are trying to send a variety of messages including: ending the drug war, the war on terrorism, bringing awareness to environmental issues, anti-consumerism, and promoting analytical thinking within the community. Rock Against Racism involves people of all cultures taking a stand, together as one.
